I wrote an essay in the morning called Ideologism which I posted on this blog as well. This time, I want to try exploring the other side to it. How devotion to a cause can actually be a good thing when put into context.
It also seems like having a sense of purpose like an ideology isn’t bad, but it needs to really be authentic, it shouldn’t just be something that makes you look successful.
In college and during the career-building phase in life, as someone living through that phase right now, we can be so preoccupied with optimization. I want to achieve this, I want to be successful, I want my resume to look good, I want a prestigious career…
But I don’t really think that should necessarily be what guides one’s decisions. It is different to do work because it makes you feel accomplished and to do work because it intrinsically matters to you.
We shouldn’t get so caught up in the future that we’re constantly worried. But neither should we be so grounded in the present that life feels empty. I guess it’s about balance.
This is interesting to think about. But life and experiences matter. Animals and humans alike we share this capacity to feel and experience. Doesn’t it feel good to make someone happy and see that smile on their face!
